Keith Southern - Youth Outdoor Connection @ www.huntmdown.com
My name is Keith Southern and I'm a hunt-a-holic!

I am 30 years old and can't remember not being in the woods, on a riverbank, or beside a pond.
Growing up I felt a need to be in the woods, but there was no one in my family who really hunted
or fished. So I learned a lot throughout the years. A lot of what not to do that is.  Being self-
taught to hunt can be discouraging.  Some years I was in the woods and some years I said, "What’
s the use?" Thankfully, my true passion and instinct got the better of me and I kept at it.
It all started with a single shot 20 gauge shotgun my mom and dad gave to me.  I got pretty
proficient at killing soda cans quickly. After a few begging a pleading sessions with my parents,
off I went hunting. My first big kill was a squirrel. I brought it home and my brother attempted to
show me how to skin it. I’m not sure he knew exactly what he was doing, because mom had a
dirty look on her face the whole time and when I asked her to cook it for me she said she would
but next time we had to do a better job!

Throughout the years I learned more and more about deer. That became my goal to get my first
deer.  I finally got one but it took a long time and was just so hard to do and so hard to find
someone to show me how to clean it, I almost gave up again.
Since then I have taken my share of deer with rifles and black powder guns.  But about four
years ago I got a bow and had my father in law teach me how to use it. I haven’t looked back
since.  Bow hunting is my passion now and I have taken several deer with my bow.

I continue to learn more and more each year. Last year I took my first turkey after a couple of
unsuccessful seasons and this year I intend to get out and hunt more game native to my state.  I
hope to get in a bear hunt this year and wild boar this year or next.

I have a great family at home. My wife hunts and fishes, as does my 6-year old son!  And as for
me, I could live in the woods.

I remember how hard it was to be self taught to do all this and these memories and my son have
driven me to start a non-profit organization in the very near future that will be dedicated to
teaching youth about the outdoors. I believe all kids should have an opportunity to learn about
the wildlife living around them and do that in the animal’s natural habitat.  If they want to learn
about hunting and fishing, then I will do my best to teach them and help them be successful at it.
Anyway, that’s me.
